Big Two Hearted Coast

Billy Bunny and Paulie Panda are on Padre Island for a camping trip.  Billy digs a firepit while Paulie watches his rabbit friend.  Sometimes the bunny becomes uncommunicative and the big bear knows that he is thinking about the war.  There is nothing he can do or say so he lets Billy do the work by himself, he will cheer up after they get camp situated and have a few beers.  The humans on the island ignore them, signs have been posted warning of the two modified friends, the cultural fear of such beings keep everyone a long way off.  A few will complain to the authorities who are already planning tighter restrictions on the only two Enhanced Footsoldier survivors.  Both the rabbit and the bear know full well that this is probably their last outing, already politicians and talk show hosts are demanding the incarceration of both of them.  The public is unaware that all the other anthros are dead, killed by the high command in an attempt to cover up what they saw as an embarrassment.
But for today these two will swim and drink and fish, tonight they will watch the glorious skyscape that paints the night with stars and planets and all that space has to offer, the Gulf will shine and the velvet blackness will be emblazoned as by diamonds thrown against darkness.  Paulie thinks that is fitting for him and his friend, their lives are pinpricks of light against an eternity awaiting them.  Paulie is very poetic.  Billy doesn't mind nighttime as long as his only friend is with him.
But for now it is time to enjoy this brief moment.

This trip is a very brief moment indeed.

The fighting is over, little bunny, time to go home, you ain't wanted or needed.  Adios.
