Happy New Year's Eve!

I'll probably buy all the wine tonight,... again. Cartoon by the stunningly talented Thomas Starling Sullivant.

The Saddest Story I Have Ever Read

Image
They were a couple in their late thirties, and they looked unmistakably married. They sat on the banquette opposite us in a little narrow restaurant, having dinner. The man had a round, self-satisfied face, with glasses on it; the woman was fadingly pretty, in a big hat. There was nothing conspicuous about them, nothing particularly noticeable, until the end of their meal, when it suddenly became obvious that this was an Occasion—in fact, the husband’s birthday, and the wife had planned a little surprise for him. It arrived, in the form of a small but glossy birthday cake, with one pink candle burning in the center. The headwaiter brought it in and placed it before the husband, and meanwhile the violin-and-piano orchestra played “Happy Birthday to You,” and the wife beamed with shy pride over her little surprise, and such few people as there were in the restaurant tried to help out with a pattering of applause. It became clear at once that help was needed, because the husband was not p

The Spirit Section, October 19, 1941

Image
Will Eisner's never equaled The Spirit.  This ran in 20 newspapers from 1940 to 1952.  It remains the most innovative of all comics.  Every Sunday, 5 million copies of this hit the streets. I could draw and write like this if I felt like it, which I don't.

Slow And Steady Wins The...Aw, The Hell With It

Image
After a month I finished a drawing, this one.  I hated it from the get go, but I made myself finish it.  Sometimes I feel the only way out of a rut is forward, and that's the case here.  The only good thing about this is that it perfectly sums up how I feel about my life. The cats don't care about any of this, they just want food. Fiddlesticks.

Irresolute

Image
I have a small chest of drawers by my computer that I use to hold drawings and pencils.  It is a nice piece of furniture of no particular value but it is well made and most useful.  Yesterday, my almost a cat now Chess and my mighty hunter cat Precious spent hours staring at the bottom of it, they certainly had something cornered underneath it.  Last night I moved it to see what they had pinned down, I found nothing.  A few minutes later there was a ruckus and Precious had chased a large rat over to the door, he was terrified and I ran over and shooed her away.  I was wearing the world's best foot armor, my Wesco engineer boots, and I had the poor little thing at my mercy.  Rats are unacceptable and I had seen this guy before, he has been in the back yard and presumably was searching for shelter.  As I looked down at him he looked at me and I swear he was beseeching me to save him.  He was sleek and handsome, I was overwhelmed with pity.  I opened the door and pushed him out into t

Bee And Bunny Do Christmas Funny

Image
Andibi sent me and my brother this wonderful card, here Andrew the Bee demonstrates beach sculpture up north.  I sent Andibi a card I found in a box with all my mom's other old cards, I didn't bother to draw a picture but I did sign it. In ink! (I don't know who that rabbit is supposed to be, as far as I'm concerned he's swanning about wearing New England summertime vacation wear with the winter temperature barely above absolute zero.  This is probably Maine's idea of a nude beach.  Me, I dress warmly for cold weather).   https://www.deviantart.com/andibi

This Is Why I Want Us And The Russians To Be Friends

Image
Whatever these two want out of life, it probably doesn't involve invading a neighbor and slaughtering non-combatant innocents.  The real Russian wild animal is in the driver's seat, and I suspect all the decent people have had enough.  (Вот почему я хочу дружить с русскими- Что бы эти двое ни хотели от жизни, это, вероятно, не связано с вторжением в соседей и убийством мирных жителей. За рулем сидит настоящий русский дикий зверь, и я подозреваю, что все порядочные люди сыты по горло). https://misterscribbles.blogspot.com/2022/10/whats-in-this-box-wicked-pandora.html Alexander and Victoria Kylynin escape the everyday through cosplay in their suburban Moscow flat. How To Ruin Pictures In 3 Easy Steps

Image
I had to drive to Austin today so I left my pet rabbit Billy in charge of the house.  What could go wrong? Nothing helps this drawing.  Nothing.

In A Pasture, 'Neath A Lantern...

Image
I used to fall in love with sweeping lines and ruined two or three years of excellent anthro rabbit drawings by Drawing While Intoxicated, and not just cheap red wine either.  Oh, no.  As I have an iron head I could keep at it long past the breaking point of mere humans.  Other than the small, minor flaw of the slightly overly large tail, this is a work of great humility reflecting Billy's inner peace in the face of Inevitable Fate and Cosmic Retribution.  The first word no doubt that springs to your mind is 'piety'.  You may now spend the rest of your day in contemplation and awe at such genius displayed on typing paper with one dollar's worth of children's map colors.  And remember -  Only Users Lose Drugs!
