Ersel Hickey

Image
A minor rockabilly star of the fifties, Hickey was in Gene Laverne's Buffalo photography studio when the above picture was taken, now considered the iconic rock and roll image.  The pose was Gene's idea.  Gene was an exotic dancer and female impersonator who had an idea for what worked on stage-      -as can be seen here.  Hicky's biggest hit, Bluebirds Over The Mountain only charted at number 75, which puzzles me because he is an awesome rocker.    https://youtu.be/F6Scy23Y6YU   Ersel with some guy.    Today he is best remembered as the co-writer of Don't Let The Rain Come Down, a huge hit for the Serendipity Singers.  Actor Ron Thompson based many of his dance moves on Hickey's, who was Thompson's mentor and friend, for his performance in the film American Pop.  Ersel died following surgery to remove his gall bladder, 2004.  Sometimes even great talent ain't enough, but aw hell , he did all right!    Ersel Hickey     June 27, 1934 – July 9, 200

Cestus, Sketch

Image
Here's a n evening sketch of an ancient Roman (bunny) boxer. Hopefully I'll turn this sketch into a finished piece someday! Roman boxing was so incredibly violent that when Virgil describes a pair of boxing gloves (“cestus”) in the epic poem the Aeneid, he casually mentions that they are “still mark'd with batter'd brains and mingled gore.” (book V). The Romans sure liked their violence. If you want to browse the other warrior rabbits I've drawn, you can find them here:  www.deviantart.com/joenso/gall… https://www.deviantart.com/joenso   I begged ( the incredible artist ) Joenso for permission to post this awesome Roman rabbit on my blog.  Alors, voilà!

Wackiki Wabbit

Image
Wackiki Wabbit, d. Chuck Jones, 1943. https://youtu.be/XyHoK9RVIrw  Bugs is a vicious, all powerful rabbit god, who does not like being regarded as a victim. These castaways are doubly unfortunate.  Bugs is angry and bored.    Bon voyage. What a bunch of maroons!

Five Years Ago Today

Image
Hurricane Harvey hit us August 25, 2017.  This pic was taken by my brother outside a shopping mall that had been gutted.  Those are bales of clothing in the lot, free for those in need.  The grown man clutching a teddy bear seems to have got his cast off pants from Junior Samples.  But - those are 600 dollar boots he's wearing.  I think this derelict is rooting through charity items looking for really cool t-shirts.  I got several cases of emergency food from the army, and God Almighty did it suck.  That stuff made the old C rations look like the morning after Halloween.  I still have most of the free food, no coffee or tea included, the candy was Skittles, bad news all the way.  The difference between a crescent wrench and the emergency food we got was that you could eat a crescent wrench if you had to.  I'm not complaining, I stored up lots of food and liquor and tobacco before the 'cane hit.  Not for me the way of improvident fools.  I stayed because I could

Wallace Hartley's Violin

Image
If the last song played by the ship's band as the Titanic sank was Nearer My God To Thee, and there are lots of reason to think it was, then it would have been the version by Sir Arthur Sullivan that Wallace Hartley grew up with. https://youtu.be/dStUT7bd0BI 'Gentlemen, I bid you farewell'.

Chuck Melville

Image
Chuck Melville was on the Rowrbrazzle staff and had his own line of comics.  He died yesterday (Saturday August 20) at 3:45 PM Pacific time of cancer.  He was a great artist and my condolences to his friends and family.  I heard of this from marmelmm's page  - www.deviantart.com/marmelmm/st…   Happy trails, Mr. Melville. en.wikifur.com/wiki/Rowrbrazzl…

Satchel, The Ball Playing Alligator

Image
Animal Crackers 31, July 1950   Hi Guys! I can tell you with a fair amount of confidence that there aren't a lot of anthro alligators out there.  And there's even fewer of 'em that play baseball for a living.  But that's just what I've got for you, thanks to Fox Feature Syndicate's Animal Crackers comics!   Animal Crackers is a pretty obscure title and like most Fox funny-animal productions, it's not super memorable either for the art or for the stories .  I'm afraid that's the case with today's fare , except that there's something kinda weird about this particular ball-playing alligator. See, his name is " Satchel ," which is strange-enough by itself .  But as it turns out, "Satchel" is a reference to Satchel Paige , an African-American baseball pitcher who became one of the first sports stars to cross race barriers and make a name for himself in the big leagues !  In 1948, he left the Negro Leagues and joine

The Puppettes

Image
I just found this great artist that does a vintage/retro style of art! Her name is Savannah Alexandra and she is the creator of the Puppettes,a 1940's-50's era group of cannine dancers (the name makes you think of New York's famous dancers, the Rockettes.) She says the idea for these gals came from the numerous art of cat girls. She wondered "why are there no dog girls?" Each cannine cutie is based on a different breed of dog. You may also notice each girl has a different body shape based on these breeds. Also notice the influence of the 40's-50's pin-up girl style of art.I hope she doesn't mind my sharing of this fantastic art! Ready for a Christmas show!   True vintage glamour!!   https://www.deviantart.com/flapperfoxy

Noir - Anthro Style!

Image
This is a great book series by P C Hatter (Stacy Bender.) It features the adventures of Kaiser Wrench,a 1940's era tiger detective. The cover art by Caribou and the book by Hatter are done in classic 1940's noir style. I can see these as classic movie posters! "If you need me,just whistle-you know how to whistle, don't you?" They're all a great read-check them out!   https://www.deviantart.com/flapperfoxy (This was originally posted on our anthro site Hybrid.  I am moving some of these to my blog so that they will get the views they deserve).
