Idyllic, Yet Uneasy

Image
Today is archery day in Escapeville.  What fun the guys are having!  'scapeville is full of things to do and to see.  But something about it bothers Billy. There is no death, or sickness, and no one is old.  Billy cannot remember how he got here.  No one travels far from town, although there are plenty of roads and vehicles.  It seems that every time that Billy means to ask others about this, he forgets to do so.  What a silly bunny I am, he thinks.  Sometimes he dreams and in those dreams are places of pain and darkness.  However, when he wakes he remembers nothing except that it is time to make breakfast and then go have coffee in town.  It is starting to look like another beautiful day!

Gone

This is me with my grandfather, Sylvester Davis, c. 1959. I'm the one in the bunny suit.  Sylvester was an executive for Gulf Oil.  He was an eidetiker and had a pronounced fondness for alcohol.  I take after him in at least one of those things.  He carried the oil flow figures for the northern hemisphere in his head, and if he had ever screwed that up he would have been fired.  The oil business at that time was not known for empathy or consideration.  For three days Sylvester was the only telegrapher at the New London nightmare.  He relayed all Walter Cronkite's dispatches for UPI.  He was a very smart man.  I have only the vaguest memory of him, I just remember a big man with a hat taking me to get ice cream one day.  Years later I retraced that trip and it was about 60 feet across an empty lot.   He died in 1961.  I am not a year old in this picture, which may have been taken in Castor, Louisiana.  He complete...

From Where All This Got Started

I got so tired of reading about how great "Maus" was that in 2012 I started drawing a comic I called "Chat", about Dien Bien Phu, cats vs. mice, the Furry Legion, France against the Viet Minh.  This was the last major paratroop battle.  Airborne has it's uses but full scale divisional assault is not one of them, to say the least.  To go a little further, such attacks have always failed.  The best executed of them all was Crete, and the Germans never used airborne troops again after that.  Had General Freyberg concentrated on protecting the airfields instead of scattering his forces the Brits would have won hands down.  General Freyberg, VC, was a great officer but his command decision turned out to be wrong.  C'est l'guerre.  In this drawing Marcel Bigeard discovers that a Major Hubert Lysenfeldt has been overseeing a critical counterattack with his radio set tuned to the wrong frequency.  The French are being chopped to pieces an...

Theodor Kittlesen

Incredible. A Bearhunt Gone Wrong, 1908. East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Askeladden's Adventure, part one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Askeladden So calm, so lovely. Black Death, 1900. Cold, wet, and beautiful seems to work for Herr Kittlesen. I do not need to be reminded not to go swimming in Norway. I see several ways that this could turn out, and none of them work for the human. Trolls are a problem in Norway.  Here in Texas it is coyotes. Where there is smoke there is fire.  Far be it from me to say that Trolls do not exist.  At least in Norway! I kinda wonder about moldy rye bread during the winter months in Scandinavia. Rarely have I seen a picture that says so much with so little. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Kittelsen I just found out about this guy...
