Dime Novel Diversions

Image
Hi Guys! I'm filling in for Billy today with some ten-cent fun from 150 years ago !  I'm talking about dime novels , the cheap and nasty ancestors of all the cool literature that we know today:  pulp magazines , paperbacks , and even comic books !    Dime novels became really popular right around the end of the Civil War , a time when more and more average Americans were finding themselves with a little extra spare coin and a little extra spare time for pleasure reading .  It was a time when people were moving around a lot , too, and if you had to spend the day on a train or a steamer getting from "A" to "B," a dime novel could make those hours go by a lot quicker !   You see, dime novels were cheap , so you could buy a bunch of 'em at one time.  They were short , too.  Unlike a bulky chapter book that you had to lug around and might not be able to finish , most dime novels could be read from beginning to end in one s...

The Law Of Life

Image
Old Koskoosh listened greedily. Though his sight had long since faded, his hearing was still acute, and the slightest sound penetrated to the glimmering intelligence which yet abode behind the withered forehead, but which no longer gazed forth upon the things of the world. Ah! that was Sit-cum-to-ha, shrilly anathematizing the dogs as she cuffed and beat them into the harnesses. Sit-cum-to-ha was his daughter's daughter, but she was too busy to waste a thought upon her broken grandfather, sitting alone there in the snow, forlorn and helpless. Camp must be broken. The long trail waited while the short day refused to linger. Life called her, and the duties of life, not death. And he was very close to death now. The thought made the old man panicky for the moment, and he stretched forth a palsied hand which wandered tremblingly over the small heap of dry wood beside him. Reassured that it was indeed there, his hand returned to the shelter of his mangy furs, and he again ...

The Guest

Image
A young man came into an ornate restaurant at eight o'clock in London. He was alone, but two places had been laid at the table which was reserved for him. He had chosen the dinner very carefully, by letter a week before. A waiter asked him about the other guest. "You probably won't see him till the coffee comes," the young man told him; so he was served alone. Those at adjacent tables might have noticed the young man continually addressing the empty chair and carrying on a monologue with it throughout his elaborate dinner. "I think you knew my father," he said to it over the soup. "I sent for you this evening," he continued, "because I want you to do me a good turn; in fact I must insist on it." There was nothing eccentric about the man except for this habit of addressing an empty chair, certainly he was eating as good a dinner as any sane man could wish for. After the Burgundy had been served he became more voluble in ...

Wolfman Of Arundel Island

Image
Lt. Hugh Barr Miller Jr. was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Strong by a Japanese torpedo.  Severely wounded by the shock wave of the destroyer's depth charges exploding, him and a few others made it to the Japanese held island Arundel.  He gave his shoes and knife to the other men and told them to try to get to a U. S. base, they were never seen again.  When he didn't die he started searching for food, having to avoid Japanese patrols.  He found the body of an Imperial soldier and took his grenades and bayonet.  Then he started attacking machine gun nests and patrols, he ambushed the narrow gauge train that supplied the soldiers, and in general was a huge pain in the ass to the Japanese.  The navy was monitoring Japanese radio, and started hearing about a wolfman killing soldiers on Arundel.  Finally he was spotted by an American scout plane and was rescued.  He dropped his captured machine gun into the ocean and swam out to the...

Eight days ago I buried my darling cat Mingo.  Last night I was reading of a druidic ceremony near Wilmlow in Cheshire.  We know of this because the body of a well built young man was deposited there between the years two and one nineteen.  It was a violent sacrifice for as to propitiate the god, gods, witch doctors or just plain nature. I realized that my burial of my beloved was an offering to the Gods, such as they are.   I did not seek good harvest but rather an immortality for my cat.  He will live as long as I do.  He sleeps until he is needed. I have been reading Sir James Frazer ever since I read about him in that most amazing hardback magazine, Horizon.  His main thing in The Golden Bough is the sacrifice of a King over the whole fertility brouhaha.  The Grove of Artemis was guarded by a runaway slave, who was King until a challenger killed him. https://misterscribbles.blogspot.com/2018/11/progression-to-acceptance-...
