Rupert Bear

Behold Rupert Bear.  Created in 1920 by Mary Tourtel for The Daily Express to compete with the The Daily Mail's Teddy Tail's by Charles Folkard.

Teddy Tail as drawn by Herbert Sydney Foxwell, who died while serving as a captain in the British Service Corps in 1943, 53 years old.  These cards were sent to fanclub members and signed by Foxwell.  Now back to Rupert.

John Harrold, between 1975 and 1995.  The badger is Bill Badger.

Rupert and the Inventor.  I cannot figure out whether this is just jingo/jango adorable or the most sinister drawing I have ever seen.  And why the skintight black gloves?  You need to finish your tea, Master Bear, it's supposed to taste like that!

Gregory Fox, Podgy Pig, Reggie and Rex Rabbit, identical twins, and Rupert.  I see the talking animals keep slave cats.

Robert Crumb drawing modified by the 15 year old Vivian Berger.  Ha ha ha! These publishers got in a lot of trouble for this-

15-year-old Vivian Berger, who admitted to smoking cigarettes at age nine and tripping for the first time at 11.
I served in the Corps with a lot of kids just like this guy.

Such a cute bear, and I would be a real jerk to point out that those two sloops are sailing directly into the wind, I really would be.

Rupert has been given the ultimate cultural accolade, a series of stamps.  Does England really have stamps that cost
£1.45?  See what happens when you give away India?

Rupert and Pong Ping the Pekinese.  That's Pong's dragon.  Pong Ping is good at math.

Dr. Chimp dismisses class.  Best of luck to you, Rupert, the first one hundred years is often the hardest!
Now back to a real talking animal-
