Walt Kelly And J. Edgar Hoover

Sunday Pogo strip, September 21st 1969.  Hoover had Kelly investigated and the comic analyzed to see if he was giving directions in code to saboteurs, commies, or peaceniks.  Kelly was a liberal who infuriated left wingers by calling 'em like he saw 'em, he despised communism and said so.  He stood against “the extreme right, the extreme left, and the extreme middle.”

He hated Senator Joseph McCarthy and portrayed him as the evil wildcat Simple J. Malarkey.  This caused problems with some papers so he put Simple's head in a sack -

McCarthy managed to put in his own recommendation for the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Corps knew he was a liar but then as now were staffed at the top by men afraid of scumbag politicians.

Senator...

Simple.

  1. Kelly passed away 50 years ago today. He was working on an animated version of Pogo and environmental pollution: "We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us".
