Mother McGrew And Kate Kangaroo

Hey Guys!

It’s your pal, Andrew the Bee, back with another book review!  This one’s called Mother McGrew and Kate Kangaroo, by Alice Crew Gall.  The pictures are by Lee Wright Stanley, who was a newspaper comic artist for more than 60 years!

This book came out way back in 1918 and is the sixth in the “Mother McGrew” series of children’s books.  Each one features a different anthro animal who misbehaves and then gets chewed out by Mother McGrew.  But that’s not all – after that, they get cursed by the old lady, who is some kind of nasty fairy godmother!  I’m tellin’ ya, this is some scary stuff for little kids to read!

It’s not like these zoo rejects don’t deserve it, though.  Our story opens with two pictures that are worth way more than a thousand words!  Kate Kangaroo looks like she’s tweaking to the max after chewing through three bags of Blo-Pops!  Now she’s careening around the countryside out of control!

She can’t just walk – instead she jumps and hops everywhere!  She’s always bumping into people or things and she doesn’t care!  Mother McGrew gives Kate a warning.  Heck, she warns Kate more than once!

 Still, it’s like the books says:

 “but Kate was willful and so would not try
to walk in a lady-like way;
Till finally an accident happened to her while
out at a party one day”

Yep, Kate can’t get her poo-poo together and she barrels right into the ice-cream pail! Mother McGrew has had it and now Kate’s in for a rough time!

After dragging the ‘roo’s backside out of the room, Mother McGrew smacks Kate with her magic stick, cursing her to hop for the rest of her life!  Looks like Kate isn’t allowed to wear clothes any more, either, and I guess she has to carry this sign:

Man, that’s tight!  But you gotta admit, the ‘roo was asking for it!  So next time you think about breaking the rules, just remember this story.  ‘Cause if you don’t, Mother McGrew will be coming for you!

That’s all for now guys!  See you later!
