A Startling Star Story

Image
The prisoner stood manacled in the main room of the Hall of Justice.  The serene marble surroundings were in contrast to the ragged, torn appearance of the chained man, who stood trim, erect, and unshaven.  He wore a black uniform indicating a high military rank, but patches of darker material stood out where emblems and badges had been cut away.  Heavily armed guards stood on each side of the accused, and the room was crowded with witnesses and reporters, an anomaly for this type of proceeding.  A curiosity of this trial is that the guilt of the defendant has been established beyond any doubt.  Oh, and he will be found guilty and punished accordingly, I may as well go ahead and mention that.  This is not a legal thriller, there are no brilliant defense attorneys or last second plot twists here.  There is no one speaking for the accused at all, even if one could be found to take the case his crime is known to the entire world, this is a military co...

Mr. Bunny's Party

Image
Old Eben Flood, climbing alone one night Over the hill between the town below And the forsaken upland hermitage That held as much as he should ever know On earth again of home, paused warily. The road was his with not a native near; And Eben, having leisure, said aloud, For no man else in Tilbury Town to hear: "Well, Mr. Flood, we have the harvest moon Again, and we may not have many more; The bird is on the wing, the poet says, And you and I have said it here before. Drink to the bird." He raised up to the light The jug that he had gone so far to fill, And answered huskily: "Well, Mr. Flood, Since you propose it, I believe I will." Alone, as if enduring to the end A valiant armor of scarred hopes outworn, He stood there in the middle of the road Like Roland's ghost winding a silent horn. Below him, in the town among the trees, Where friends of other days had honored him, A phantom salutation of the dea...

Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe

Image
Stu Sutcliffe quit music to attend art school in Germany.  His teacher was Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.  The original bass guitarist for the Beatles, he had a career in front of him that would have seen him as a major artist independent of any rock and roll band.  He collapsed in art class and died in the ambulance, 1962.  This guy was extremely talented.  21 years old at his death. What a shame.  Awesome hair. Many young people start down a false path before achieving their destiny.  Here is Stu with some guys he knew. The guitar is a 1959 - 60 Hofner 500/5 bass. https://youtu.be/1smXxomztPA  It's a myth that he couldn't play, as you can hear in the above.  The guitar is now owned by the Hard Rock Cafe. Album cover bait if I ever say it.  The worst thing about Stu's death is his loss to the art world.

Das Narrenschiff, Today

Image
The Ship Of Foyls , London, 1509. English and Latin Translation of Sebastian Brandt's wildly popular Das Narrenschiff, 1494  'These depictions of men transformed or transforming into asses show a clear link between the trope of asinine transformation and folly. The ass was long associated with stupidity and folly, and donkey ears were often incorporated into the hood of a fool. The ass also had other connotations. In the biblical story of Balaam (Numbers, 12) the ass becomes a symbol of both suffering and wisdom. The ass could also have sexual connotations with a pun on ‘ass’, and, by extension, ‘tail’, as well as being an instrument of humiliating sexual punishment for women – prostitutes in medieval France were punished by being made to ride naked on an donkey.   Thought provokingly, the fool that is fully ass is at the top of the wheel, in the position of best fortune'. Article from the British Library site.  The woodcut is based on t...

Prodigy

The 'Dude', AKA Tenderfoot The Gamblers This was drawn by a 14 year old boy .  Now he is a talented anthro artist, one of the best yet.     Andrew The Bee.  Andrew derives from 'andro' meaning "manly", also "brave", "strong", "courageous", and "warrior".  The discerning reader will notice how close this word is to 'anthro', human-like, which is what this site trumpets and promotes ad infinitum.  Over the years Andy has drifted from these excellent rabbits, possibly even Texas rabbits, to a more Cervidae focused anthropomorphism, or 'furry', as such artwork is less formally known. https://misterscribbles.blogspot.com/2019/12/the-surprise-of-my-young-life.html  As a Texan who identifies with aggressive hard drinking heavily armed poorly behaved bunnies I can only lament this sad loss of a great chronicler of the Lagomorph Legend.  But time will heal all, and what we h...

Yipes, Stripes!

Image
I recently put up an essay on Jungle Comics by the very good artist Andrew the Bee.  While shaking out the envelope that it came in, I found this.  I am beyond honored to have such a thing drawn specially for little 'ole me, I really am.  And yes, Andy, I like this very much. Billy is scared of snakes. Very scared. A narrow Fellow in the Grass Occasionally rides- You may have met him? Did you not His notice instant is- The Grass divides as with a Comb- A spotted shaft is seen, And then it closes at your Feet And opens further on- He likes a Boggy Acre- A Floor too cool for Corn- But when a Boy and Barefoot I more than once at Noon Have passed I thought a Whip Lash Unbraiding in the Sun When stooping to secure it It wrinkled and was gone- Several of Nature's People I know and they know me I feel for them a transport Of Cordiality But never met this Fellow Attended or alone Without a tighter Breathing And Zero at t...
