Das Wettlaufen zwischen dem Hasen und Swinegel in Bildern erzählt
(The race between the rabbit and hedgehog is told in pictures).
This is a brothers Grimm story, the hedgehog wins the race by using his wife as a double and she is always at the finish line before the hare. The hare, infuriated, keeps running the race to prove how fast he is and dies of exhaustion. There is a Bugs Bunny cartoon, Tortoise Beats Hare, that uses this premise.
Am I the only one who thinks Grimm's tales are, well, grim?

Auf Wiedersehen.
Wonderful illustrations! I know that style of cats very well—and yes, Grimm tales are grim! And to think, they cleaned them up a little. Especially by the second or third editions when they realized children were reading them. It was they who made Hansel and Gretel’s mom a stepmom, for instance—changed back to mother in the Victorian era by a man who thought that stepparents were ill served by fairy tales. I cannot remember his name, but I can see his portrait. Folktales have always been a little gruesome!
