Year Of The Plague

The Plague.  Arnold Bocklin, 1898.

Our next stop is...

...Isle of the Dead, 1883, third version.  Arnold Bocklin, the original party animal.

Isle of the rich dead, more like.  All the rest of us go to the Everglades of the dead.  Oh, and this hung in the Obersalzberg after being acquired by that madcap Austrian art fan, A. Hitler.  Liberated from the Reich Chancellery,  1945.

Vosh y Smert, Lice and Death.  The next line says Droogya - friends, and I can't read the rest.  Or I don't feel like it, same thing.  Oh, wait, here we are-
Lice And Death Are Friends!  (They taint our lives, Lice and Death are sworn brothers!  Eliminate lice, the spreaders of disease!  Russian civil war era poster, 1919).  The artist is O. Grin, who spent 8 years in a camp after being accused of anti-Soviet activities.

 German version.

Pope Formosus and Stephen VII.  Jean-Paul Laurens, 1870.

 Feeling sick?  Then go to Rome.  You can call for help from there.

 And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

The Germ

 A Mighty Creature is the Germ

Though smaller than the pachyderm.

His customary dwelling place

Is deep within the human race.

His childish pride he often pleases,

By giving people strange diseases.

Do you, my poppet, feel infirm?

You probably contain a germ.

Ogden Nash

The weak shall inherit the Earth.  The earth if they're lucky.  Last man standing keeps the shovel!

Your prize.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Emily Dickinson

If they catch me, they will kill me...but first they have to catch me.
