In less than 24 hours, the giant Jess Willard, 6' 5", 255 lbs, will be almost killed by the 179 lb Jack Dempsey.

Notice that there is no neutral corner stuff.  Also, and this certainly was the deciding factor in this match, one could stand over the fallen fighter and hit him as soon as one knee left the canvas.  This fight should have been stopped about the 4th knockdown.  Had Willard a manager as good as Jack's, he would have kept his title.  Jack was out of the ring when the second round started due to problems with the bell.  He lost right there.  It would not have been fair but the rules are the rules.  Willard managed himself and was too dazed to notice.  The same thing happened in the Firpo brawl.  When Jack was pushed back into the ring by reporters, he lost.  Firpo managed himself and did not notice.
Jess was knocked down 7 times in the first round, lost several teeth, suffered broken ribs and jaw, and was certainly concussed.  He made it through the next two rounds with no knockdowns, but he could not come out for the fourth.  This guy was no sissy.  Rumors of loaded gloves continue to float around 100 years later but those are easily disproved.  Jack could hit like a bastard and that was that.

Jack Dempsey is the new Heavyweight Champion of the World.
