Drama Does Not Require An Audience

Image
Here Billy studies two different paths.  I drew this as a dramatic Jack Kirby style villain posing sort of thing, but I lost interest and here is what I have done. I just finished reading Lord of the Flies again and I have been wondering how many symbols can an artist put into his work?  Every element of LOTF is symbolic, and there are a lot of people who have something to say about it on the web.  That dead airman certainly had a pistol and knife on him, but the chute and lines would have been life savers.  And remember the kid with the mulberry birthmark?  Roger murdered him, although the book says nothing of this.  But above all, there was no plane available in the English air fleet that could have made a flight to the Pacific from the home island non-stop.  If there had been, it would have been a Globemaster, and that would have been carrying the Royal Family.  When I first read this book I thought the boys were at a school in som...

Mom And Dad's Front Porch

Image
This is Little Bay from the front porch of my parent's house.  The land to the left across the water is the exclusive neighborhood of Key Allegro.  The strip to the right is Rockport's blue water beach, and the waterway between them takes boaters to the Laguna Madre, the lake formed on the inside of Padre Island.  The Laguna Madre has a different eco-system than the Gulf.  It is a great place for fishing.  This picture was taken by my brother and he was facing 119 degrees SE when he took it.  This accounts for the spectacular cloud colors. This house was probably built in the early 70's.  It has a tube intercom in it, a device that their other house in Plano had, and boy is it useless.  So much easier to yell, we got fussed at all the time back in the day for ignoring the intercom. The panoramic feature on my brother's phone is something else.

Witch Moth

Image
A couple of nights ago, I was outside and enjoying the on shore breeze when a huge black moth flapped over my knees.  It looked like a bat.  I was hoping he would land on me and he did, sitting on the toe of my boot in all his velvet glory.  He had faint orange stripes on his wings.  Then he flew off.  This is one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen.   La mariposa de muerte, the butterfly of death.  This is the black witch moth, known to the Aztec.  They are huge and lovely.  Judging from the Spanish, there are superstitions about this insecto volador.  Mine was about four inches in wingspan.

Incredible Talent Must Be Re-Shared!

Image
This is a an extraordinary artist who gets paid for his work.  I recommend a visit to his site: http://kristenplescow.tumblr.com/ An aside here.  I have spent a lifetime in Texas and I have only one time seen a cowboy wearing chaps, outside of parades.  (I live on the Gulf).  Bikers like them, leather is so much cheaper than skin.  The man above is wearing the best fitting chaps possible, but the T-shirt advertises a well known fetish bar in London.  This guy has what it takes to wear such clothing.  One's accessories are to emphasize your looks, not add to them.  All the great things to wear in the world will not make a sloppy person good looking.  This guy looks like a Marvel comics villian, which is a great approach and considerate of others! These are working chaps and you better believe as soon as this guy hit the town the first thing he took off were the leather overbreeches.  The gun s...

Grace Lodge And Brer Rabbit

Image
Awesome, huh?  This is by someone I just now found out about, Grace Lodge. She illustrated some of Enid Blyton's Brer Rabbit books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enid_Blyton What a great artist! Why was Enid Blyton writing about Brer Rabbit?  There are plenty of English literary scamps out there, Puck comes to mind. I have never seen this before, ever. Anthro rabbits just send me! What fun! Brer Bear Brer Fox Goodbye.

A Fishing Fool

Image
Bunnies will eat fish.  Most of the rabbit people avoid water, but coastal bunnies get used to it.  Here we see Billy and friend with hand lines trying their luck.  Billy has his own theories when fish bite and he does as well as those without any theories at all.  His buddy has caught a fish and many others besides.  Billy figures if he does not catch fish he does not have to clean them.  Billy hates the idea of causing hurt to other beings.  As a young bunny he was a monster and he has much to answer for.  His increasing awareness of what an awful person he was has made aging uncomfortable.

What To Do, What To Do - Hmmmm.....

Image
So few things are fun by yourself.  Chess, for instance.  I have tried playing against myself but the bastard is always a step ahead of me.  I have two electric guitars to work on and what a snooze that is.  I guess I will have to settle for some vigorous exercise.  Run around the block or some fucking thing.  Oh, hell, it's raining again.  Stuck in the house with nothing but the internet! I will have to make do.

A New Leonardo?

Image
La Bella Principessa This turned up at a Christie's auction and was knocked down for almost 22,000 dollars U.S.  Peter Silverman had submitted a bid but but was outbid by Kate Ganz.  Years later Silverman found it for sale again and acquired it for about the same money.  This portrait in colored chalk was attributed to 19th century artists copying Renaissance paintings.  Specifically, one Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who also drew this - Half nude female, Von Carolsfeld.  Same model but older? The problem with this is that the disputed picture is radiocarbon dated to at least 225 years old.  At least!  Which, when I think about it, is about when this would have been drawn.  Oh dear, oh dear.  Silverman has turned down 80 million for the drawing. Heraclitus and Democritus, by Bramante Heraclitus is a portrait of Leonardo, and Domocritus is a self portrait of Donato Bramante.  These t...

Some Cats And One Rabbit

Image
A cat with hookah and dancing mice.  Probably some real good shit in that pipe.  This seems to be a defunct company out of St. Louis.  The note on this said K. San pablo.  That is all.  I've been here! I have rarely been here, while I had money.

Action Bunny!

Image
Here Action Bunny springs to the rescue!  Action Bunny is not to be compared with the forgettable and silly one shot comic from the 1930's -   A story predicated on a space alien raised by humans on a farm, this "superhero" could be felled only by kryptonite, available everywhere.  Really, who thought that this would fly?  Or remember that other great Action concept, the action figure? Action figure indeed.  What a scam.  These guys didn't do a goddamn thing.  This toy was marketed in the early sixties to young boys waiting their turn to go die in Vietnam.  They never sold well, and after Humphrey got elected and pulled us out of the war these "dolls for boys" disappeared off the shelves.  And then there was Zap-Action!   Even as dumb as I was in 1971, I gave this a pass.  Imagine trying to make a movie out of this concept. The rise of the four fingered god. Great artwork, guys, way to...
