This seems to me unusual to personify the Plague as an old woman or a bird.  Maybe this has something to do with the Norwegian temperament, after all they sentenced a man who killed 77 people in a few hours to twenty years in jail.  Harsh weather, harsh justice.  But even Kittlesen was capable of lighthearted humorous illustration-
